There are many things fashionistas could say to describe what they see at New York Fashion Week. Elaborate hair and makeup. Exquisite dresses, gowns, suits, skirts, jackets. Sky-high stilettos. Bags and jewels. Best-dressed celebs.
But the unexpected? We’re always waiting for that.
Try boating lines, rope, fish netting and a Sublime track playing in the background. Candela designer Gabriela Perezutti fuses all of those elements perfectly in her fresh, feminine and colorful nautically-inspired Spring 2014 line.
Here’s the breakdown.
FASHION: Nautical accents tied together the 21 looks in Candela’s Spring 2014 presentation. The collection embodied a fun and feminine mix of silk, eyelet, lace, denim and knits – with multiple fabrics often unexpectedly paired in a single look. Standout pieces ranged from floor-length gowns to casual vests. Many of the looks were fastened with roped tassel belts or straps, or draped loosely. Each look was complemented with a very chic pair of metallic or embroidered cut-out flats, sandals or strappy heels. The nautical theme was not only carried out with rope and netting, but with pops of traditional and non-traditional spring colors like white, coral, red, navy, accents of green and yellow, flesh-tones and pops of black. Each look had its own unique and feminine touch via Perezutti’s thoughtful use of ruffles, embroidery and multicolored fringe accents.
HAIR/Amy Farid for Bumble and Bumble: The hair in the Candela SS14 collection showcased a variety of styles, ranging from sculptured and elegant to tousled and undone. Hairstyles included retro updos, messy topknots, braids and long textured waves, with the various styles occasionally encased in colored netting. The lack of uniformity complemented the spirit of the collection.
MAKEUP/Bobbie Brown Cosmetics: Soft applications of a neutral palette created a fresh-faced and natural feel. The “barely-there” makeup balanced the statement hair and reinforced the notion of effortless femininity. Some eye looks were emphasized with precise liner along the upper lashline, while others had a mere wash of light gold shimmer. Cheeks were lightly dusted with a subtle pink blush. Pouts were painted light pink or nude.
