Last month I gushed about my favorite cruelty free makeup brushes. Now that you’re stocked up, it’s time to learn how to extend the life of your fabulous new brushes with my Makeup Brush Cleaner! I hate to use harsh cleaners on my brushes because they can ruin the bristles and because I don’t want that harshness all up on my skin. So, for the past few years, I’ve compiled my favorite brush cleaning recipes (and most of them have ingredients you want in your home anyway!)! Let’s make some Makeup Brush Cleaner, the dirty hippy way…of course!
Quick Cleaning Makeup Brush Cleaner
So you’re already cleaning your brushes regularly? Cool. You’re probably in the minority (at least I was!), but you’re also probably spending way too much on fancypants brush cleaner. If you already have a routine, this recipe offers light cleansing with relaxing properties and I love it! Grab a small glass bowl and mix the following:
5 drops Tea Tree Oil (acts as a gentle astringent & is great for skin)
5 drops Lavender Oil (conditions bristles & adds “chill” to your brushes)
2 oz warm water
Simply mix water and oils in a glass bowl and gently swish bristles through the mixture for about 2 minutes. Rinse well. Done-zo!
Deep Cleaning Makeup Brush Cleaner
If you’re like me, you never cleaned your brushes. Gunk just piled on and it was all around pretty gnarly. For that very first wash you need to bring our the heavy (not harsh!!) hitters for cleansing and disinfecting.
2 tbsp. fractionated coconut oil (I order mine in bulk on Amazon)
5 drops Grapefruit Oil (another natural cleanser!)
5 drops Tea Tree Oil
Mix in a small glass bowl and rub brush throughout the mixture to fully soak up the ingredients. Then rub brush on the palm of your hand. Gently squeeze, rinse, and repeat until water runs clear. Coconut Oil acts as a “grabber” for all the nasties hiding in your brushes and makes the bristles feel silky smooth!
