Diva Dish: The UnBlowout

Diva Dish: The UnBlowout

Whether it’s running around to the tents and then the after-parties during New York Fashion Week (like many of my city friends just did) or running after a 5-year old with infant twins in your arms (like one of my Brooklyn best friends does daily) or running a women’s magazine as a single mom (like one of my jet-setting international best friends does and makes look easy), there will come a time when hair styling, or even hair washing, just doesn’t make it onto your daily priority list.

What’s a disheveled diva to do??

Say hello to  The UnBlowout.

Its beauty is that you need only a curling iron. Whatever product is left in your hair, mixed with any dirt or oil, makes it primed for this easy solution, as taught to me by the legendary mane man, Julien Farel.

I walked in to his oasis of a salon in the Setai on Fifth Avenue with hot mess hair. In a matter of minutes I was transformed.

Here’s his trick…

Do not wash, wet or brush hair.

Section and then twist hair.

Using an iron, curl the twisted hair.

As a general rule, for shorter hair and for layers, use a small barrel. For longer hair, use a large barrel.

To create a purposely undone look (think sexy bed-head), use two barrel sizes and alternate between them.

Finish by breaking the perfect curls into soft sultry waves.

Viola!
