The Dish With DDR: Get Dry, Winter Skin Ready for Spring!

Winter can be extremely rough on the skin and if you don’t take care of it properly you can go into spring with not so desirable skin.  Here are my favorite tips to keep you looking fresh, moisturized and ready for the upcoming spring season!

It’s important to know that our skin is our biggest organ.  The best way to take care of it starts from the inside out.  Drink plenty of water.  Our bodies are made up of 70% water; therefore, water is what will help keep the body hydrated!  The recommended amount is half your body weight in ounces.  So, that means if you weigh 120 divide that by 2 and you get 60.  This means you must drink 60 ounces a day to be fully hydrated! Drink up!

Load up on healthy fats.  Fill up with monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids like avocados, ground flax, fish, nuts and olive oil.

Eat fruits and veggies!  Vitamin-C rich foods can boost your body’s production of collagen.  Think oranges, grapefruit, berries, kale, and collard greens.

After showering, while skin is still wet or lightly towel dried, apply a thin layer of baby or coconut oil.  This will soothe skin.  Use a deep conditioning lotion to really trap in moisture.

If lips are dry and flaky, take a clean, new toothbrush and gently scrub off the skin.  I like to make a homemade scrub of olive and sugar in the raw to exfoliate the sensitive lip skin.  Then apply a lip balm that contains lanolin to moisturize, soften, and hydrate lips.

We wash our hands a lot during the day (hopefully) and that can cause a lot of irritation and extra dryness.  Always keep a hand moisturizer around and apply several times a day.  Use rubber gloves when washing dishes and use lukewarm water to prevent hands from getting too dried out.

Always, always, apply SPF of at least 30 before heading out in the AM! You can still get sunburn in the winter.

Once a week use a facial scrub to exfoliate any dead skin.  I like Origins GinZing Facial Scrub.  This will help keep your skin bright and refreshed.  Skip any products that contain alcohol and don’t forget to use your favorite moisturizer after!
